Living in Missouri means countless opportunities for ghost hunting. In fact, if you simply do not believe in the paranormal, you might have that disbelief put to the test over and over again, especially if you visit one of Missouri's haunted destinations. This haunted cave in Missouri offers the chance to learn more about its resident spirits and to marvel at this spectacular natural wonder.
You might want to wear a jacket or a sweater - and not just because the cave is a chilly 57 degrees Fahrenheit all year round - when you join a guided tour of Onondaga Cave in Leasburg.
No, those chills that shoot up and down your spine might not be from the cool temperatures but, rather, from its eerie history.
Tours of the cave last 1.5 hours and focus on the cave's rich history. However, the St. Louis Paranormal Research Society sometimes holds public investigations of the cave.
You can also join a two-hour lantern tour.
Even if you go on a classic tour, keep an eye and an ear out for anything, well....strange. After all, this is perhaps the largest haunted destination in Missouri.
While explorers discovered Onondaga Cave in 1886. who owned the cave was a point of contention for decades.
Artressia Davis originally owned the cave, although it's said she was scammed into selling it to two men. She would battle with them from 1886 until her death in 1943, hoping the court would step in and help.
Legend says that she was so upset about her loss of the cave that she would spend countless hours there, shooing away anyone would dared visit. Her restless spirit may still lurk there today.
Another spirit who is believed to still roam the cave is that of a young woman. She drowned when her boat tipped over during a tour in 1915.
At the time, the cave was pitch black, making her rescue impossible. Whether her spirit remains in the cave to this day...well, that all depends on to whom you talk.
