Missouri’s well-known for an abundance of things – from such natural wonders as Elephant Rocks to man-made wonders like The Gateway Arch. Did you known that Missourians have also raised the bar, setting a number of world records? Here are just some world records held by Missourians that definitely deserve recognition.
Yep, you read right. The World Record for the fastest time bending nails happened right here in Missouri. Chad Netherland bent 10 nails in just 21.13 seconds on July 14, 2006 at The Millennium Hotel and Convention Centre in St Louis.
On March 12, 2006, a tornado swept through Fordland. Matt Sutter, just 19 at the time, was in his home when the tornado struck. Rendered unconscious, Sutter later woke up in a field 1,307 feet away from his home. He suffered only minor injuries.

Steve Schmidt first broke the record in 2010 then broke it again in 2013 at Leslie United Methodist Church Recreation Pavilion in Missouri. Schmidt lifted a 220-pound weight with his teeth 60 times in 60 seconds, setting the world record.

Remember Steve Schmidt from above? He broke another world record, too, by removing a whopping 27 nails from a piece of wood in just one-minute. He accomplished that feat in Columbia.
Have you ever been so angry you want to tear something apart? Edward Charon may not have been angry when he visited the Branson Mall in Missouri in 2006. That day, however, he broke a world record by ripping apart – from top to bottom – 56 phone books. Each phone book tallied 1,006 pages, and Charon completed his feat in just three minutes.
While it really doesn’t fall under crazy, Carl Fisher is owed props and broke a world record for the longest serving school bus driver. He drove students in Pleasant Hope, Missouri, from 1946 until 2010. (He was still going as of 2010.) Fisher logged more than two million miles during his career.
Riding a unicycle sounds challenging enough, but doing it backwards to break a world record? That’s just what Steve Gordon did in 1999. He was at Southwestern Missouri State University in Springfield when he rode his unicycle backwards for 68 miles.
