The Chickasawhay River is about 210 miles long. It's located mainly in the southeastern portion of the state.

Though the river is a popular spot for water-related fun, like canoeing and kayaking, not many realize its historical significance.

However, the river’s importance has long been obvious to geologists - and that’s because the strata* along the river are rich with fossils.

*FYI – strata are layers of sedimentary rock or soil, or igneous rock that were formed at the Earth's surface.

In fact, according to Mark Puckett, a geology professor at USM, many species of fossils from the river were the first of their kind to be studied. He also noted, "People have collected fossils in the river for decades."

The strata also hold clues about ancient changes in sea level.

According to Puckett, the shape of the river and its banks are "directly related to the changes in sea level that happened millions of years ago."

For example, portions of the river feature steep banks and waterfalls – both indicators that the sea level was once pretty high.

The exposed rock layers also serve as a reference point for ancient global history and climate change.

Loaded with history and opportunities for outdoor fun, Chickasawhay River is a great spot for everyone from nature lovers to history buffs.
