The Oldest General Store In Mississippi Has A Fascinating History

Although not as common as they once were, there are several general stores in Mississippi, each as charming as the next. Of these historic stores, the Simmons-Wright Company in Kewanee definitely stands out. Established in 1884, not only is it the oldest general store in the state, it’s also the only one of its kind in terms of architecture and style in the area.

From the time the Simmons-Wright Company opened until the 1960s, a majority of the store’s business came from selling cotton along with providing merchandise and supplies to farmers.
Today, the general store is a must-visit, frequented by locals and tourists. In addition to the store, you’ll find several other historic buildings on the property, including a warehouse, cotton gin, and blacksmith shop.
Step inside and, aside from feeling as if you’ve been transported back in time, you’ll undoubtedly be impressed as you take in two floors of merchandise.
Tables are set up throughout the restaurant; however, one of the best spots to enjoy your meal is on the second floor, which overlooks the lower sales floor, providing a view of the entire store.
