Long before the days of Wal-Mart and other big retailers, general stores were the go-to place for basic grocery and household needs. Today, the concept of a general store may seem outdated, but they do still exist. These quaint little stores can be found all over the state – many operational, all nostalgic. Check out the list below for charming general stores in Mississippi.

Much of Church Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and that includes this general store which also served as a post office.

This general store and restaurant may be known today for its delicious hamburgers, but the Onward Store has another claim to fame – it is the site of Theodore Roosevelt’s famous bear hunt.

More than a general store, JC’s also serves as a restaurant and concert venue.

Still operating on a limited basis, the Causeyville General Store was originally opened in the late 1800’s. Located next to the store is a grist mill which has been converted into a shop/museum.

Closed for several years now, this general store was surprisingly known for its sliced souse rather than hot coffee.

Not much has changed at this general store since its opening in the late 1800’s, which is why visiting patrons are guaranteed to feel as if they’ve been “transported back to a time long forgotten.”

Part of the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum’s "Small Town Mississippi," this is a replica of a typical 1920’s general store - complete with merchandise reminiscent of yesteryear.

The self-described “very modern, yet down home, 21st century general store,” offers everything from local feed and garden products to specialty items such as Wardell’s Specialty Pecans and Miss Del’s Southern Delights, a line of sauces, salsas, and pickles.

Built in the early 1900’s, the E.L. Bruce Co. General Store has been converted into the Bruce Forestry Museum.
