This Fascinating Michigan Mine Has Been Abandoned And Reclaimed By Nature For Decades Now

Did you know that the Great Lake State has a rich copper mining history? The Upper Peninsula had many thriving copper mines and you can even tour a mine that operated until 1920. But for adventurers who love to discover ruins in the woods, you need to visit this abandoned mine in Mohawk, Michigan that’s been reclaimed by nature.

Cliff Mine is a former copper mine and ghost town in Keweenaw County, Michigan.

Established in 1844, solid copper was mined here ranging from 100 to 1,000 tons and the mine was very profitable. A horizontal tunnel was driven into the base of the cliff where total production reached 38.2 million pounds of refined copper.

From 1845-1854, the Cliff Mine was the most successful copper mine in the United States. Copper Country in Michigan began because Cliff Mine was the first profitable mine in the area.

While the mine was in its prime, 840 men were employed, and the little village that housed its employees and families clustered around the base of the cliff.

You can still find the old cemetery with some tombstones, but mostly all that remains are rock piles and building foundations. You can find the cemetery across the west branch of the eagle river where the village later moved. On the other side of the road, a railway station was established, and the old cemetery is just beyond the tracks.
Adventurous hikers can explore the now abandoned ghost town and mine that remains.
