Stone’s Public House is a bar and restaurant in Ashland. It’s been around since 1832 and has been a favorite with locals and visitors for decades.
In fact, Stone’s is so good that some former patrons may have even stuck around after death. The bar is said to be haunted by at least seven ghosts, one of whom may actually be John Stone himself.

Staff and patrons at the bar have reported water taps that turn on without human aid and feeling ghostly hands on their shoulders. Assistant manager Butch Adams has been so spooked by experiences at the bar that he won’t stay alone in the restaurant at night.

In the 1980s, the restaurant hired paranormal experts to get to the bottom of the hauntings. One expert declared that the ghosts were linked to a murder that took place in the 1800s over a gambling debt incurred at an upstairs card game.
In fact, the owner actually paid for the excavation of the basement to look for the buried body of the victim. It’s unknown if anything was every uncovered.
Even if you’re not a believer in the supernatural, Stone’s is still an excellent spot to linger any evening of the year. With their roaring fire, spacious patio, and yummy New England fare like roasted garlic mashed potatoes or pan-seared Atlantic salmon, you’ll want to stay until the wee hours.
