Prohibition lasted from 1920 until 1933, during which time the Eighteenth Amendment made the production, sale, and transportation of alcohol illegal in the U.S. Carrie Nation became the face of the Temperance Movement.

Nation had been married to a man who died from alcoholism and she believed that God was guiding her to destroy alcohol supplies. Initially, she used rocks but soon she graduated to hatchets. While Nation was a complicated figure, who also worked to advance women’s rights, her hatchet habit made her the enemy of bars across the country.
In the years since Prohibition ended, several bars have adopted Nation's name, in defiance of her cause. That's the case with Carrie Nation in Boston, a restaurant and speakeasy located in Beacon Hill.
