The Story Behind Maine’s Most Haunted House Is Beyond Terrifying

Maine counts horror writer, Stephen King, as one of its most famed residents, so it should come as no surprise that we have a fair few hidden spooky gems. While we have lots of haunted examples, one house stands out as just a little scarier than the rest.

While thoughts of Cape Elizabeth often evokes images of its most famous lighthouse, those in search of more fearful tales might find themselves researching what has become of Beckett's Castle.

Beckett's Castle was built in 1871 on the banks overlooking Casco Bay in Cape Elizabeth.

The stately, stone home was Inhabited by poet, Sylvester Beckett, until his death in 1882.

But since that time, there have been numerous stories of Beckett's ghost bothering folks who have either lived there or simply passed through.

It seems every ghost has their go-to way of haunting, and Beckett is no different. Most accounts of his appearance take the form of a blue orb. Many report witnessing bed linens being stripped from beds, watching frames being ripped from walls and feeling unexplained cold spots within the house.

But, without a doubt, one of the scariest stories comes from a woman who lived in the house during the 1970s.

She and the others living in the home during their college years were refinishing floors. While doing the work, they found the home cold, deciding to sleep in the living room for the warmth of the fireplace.

During the cold night, three front doors opened in various directions at the same time. Inexplicably, a burst of HOT air came in from the cold night.

On other occasions, paintings would be moved off of walls, only staying put after the group had put the art on the walls in a way that Beckett approved of.

One of the scariest reports from the same woman came in the form of a dream.

Many nighst she would wake up with images of a ghostly woman missing her pants.

The next time you find yourself in the fog of Cape Elizabeth, consider if perhaps the ghost of Sylvester Beckett has finally found his way out of his home...

...and towards the shores of Casco Bay.

Today, Beckett's Castle is a private home and no trespassing should happen here.
