This Historic Park In Maine Offers Both Sweeping Views Of Casco Bay And Some History

Fort Allen Park in Portland, Maine offers accessible scenic views, historical markers, and year-round activities.

Most of us can agree that Maine has some of the most scenic spots to enjoy nature. Many are found off-the-beaten-path, secreted along the coast where only the most intrepid can find them. We love that the state offers so much adventure, but we don't love the idea that finding beauty here requires effort. Instead, we like to find scenic spots that are accessible to many. This park has some of the best views in the state and it's can be found right in Portland.

The Eastern Promenade in Portland sits at the top of the Munjoy Hill neighborhood overlooking Casco Bay. It's a popular spot for summertime lounging as well as fun in the wintertime snow. And, as this photo proves, it's one of the best views in the entire city!

Fort Allen Park sits on the Eastern Prom and offers incredible views, as well as some fascinating local history markers.

The park is 10 acres and has been around officially since the 1890s after being a Revolutionary War fort in 1775 and during the War of 1812.

Today it's a popular place to see the boats come in and out of Portland Harbor and to enjoy live music in the bandstand.

Those with a love of history will enjoy seeing the cannon that was once a part of the USS Maine which sank in the Havana Harbor in Cuba in February of 1898.

The park is also home to a restored ship mast from the USS Portland

There's even a memorial to honor the three thousand men and women who died during the Arctic Campaign on convoys to and from Russia between 1941 and 1945. The memorial was a gift from Murmansk City in Russia and Great Britain.

There's also a lovely memorial honoring the seven Mainers who perished on 9/11.

Fort Allen Park is one of the most beautiful places in Portland to reflect and to take in the coastal setting of the city.

It's especially beautiful at sunset when the colors of the sky shine in oranges, purples and pinks.

Ask any Portlander and they'll be hard-pressed to name a place they love more than the Eastern Prom and beautiful Fort Allen Park.
