Frank E. Woodworth Preserve Loop: A Beautiful Coastal Maine Hike

There’s only one way to truly appreciate the great outdoors here in Maine and that’s by getting outside and experiencing it. That doesn’t mean you need to conquer the highest peak, though. There are plenty of places to visit that provide the calm that comes with fresh air without spending hours heading uphill. Some of the best trails, including this one, can be found in out-of-the-way areas of Maine.

There are places hidden in Maine that can only be found by those devoted to loving this place. The Frank E. Woodworth Preserve in Harrington is one of those places.

Depending on where you're starting from, the preserve might be a bit of a trek. But, it's worth every twist and turn to find it. When you do, you'll be rewarded with coastal views and forest shade that ease the mind and restore the soul.

There are a few different trails to explore and many different areas of the preserve to see. Everything is well-marked, so you can make a plan when you arrive and then follow markers to expand your adventure.

The 127-acre preserve sits on Willard Point. It also includes three acres on Hog Island and land on Peter and George Islands.

The best way to see as much of the area as possible is to take the Frank E. Woodworth Preserve Loop.

The trail is about 2.5 miles and winds through the mossy forest before leading to the coast.

The journey is spectacular and kids especially love how many features you'll find here. Moss, tall trees, and even a babbling brook will keep everyone busy along the way.

The views here are fantastic, no matter what time of year you visit.

Once you arrive at the water, enjoy the views for a bit by sitting on the benches. Then, continue the loop to arrive back at the place you started.
