Maine has a fairly small population for its size, which works to the advantage of those that love gazing at the night sky. The lack of light pollution means that some of the stars and planetary action not visible to most people, can be seen by lucky Mainers!
One of the best things to view over Maine is our very own galaxy, The Milky Way.
Some statistics say that only about 20% of the US population has seen the galaxy with the naked eye, making this hike even more exciting. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a lucky few?
Each year, The Milky Way can be seen over the southeastern portion of the US during the spring and as the earth moves, it becomes more visible in the fall over the southwestern sky.
But, Maine is lucky enough to get some of that action. Specifically, Curtis Cove in East Blue Hill.
This peaceful beach overlooks the Blue Hill Bay and Long Island.
And it allows for a 180 degree view of the southern portion of the sky. This will allow for optimal views of the spectacular sight.
To access the beach, first head to East Blue Hill in Hancock County.
Once in town, head east on Curtis Cover Road for less than a mile. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll see an area to park near a curb on the right side of the road. The access point is marked by two posts at the start of the walkway down to the beach.
Once you’re there, set up some beach chairs, bundle up and enjoy the peaceful solitude of a gorgeous Maine night on the beach!
This video, taken during the day, provides a good idea of what the cove views encompass:
