Visit The South’s Largest Antebellum Plantation At The Beautiful Nottoway Plantation In Louisiana
The Greater River Road Area between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is home to some of the most historic plantations not just in Louisiana, but the entire country. It’s this historic little road where you’ll find the iconic plantations like Oak Alley, Houmas House, Laura Plantation, and countless others. While Oak Alley may be the most famous plantation, there’s one that’s absolutely massive and you simply have to see it to believe it, and that’s the Nottoway Plantation in White Castle.
You’ll find the Nottoway Plantation tucked away in the tiny town of White Castle, Louisiana.
Built in 1859, this massive plantation house clocks in at a whopping 53,000-square-feet of floor space, making it the largest remaining antebellum plantation house in the South.

This place needs its own zip code.
And the interior is just as jaw-dropping as the exterior.
The Greek Revival and Italianate-styled mansion was built by John Randolph with the help of architect Henry Howard with the intention that no expense would be spared in the construction of this dazzling plantation. Mission accomplished.
With more than 64 rooms, 165 doors, and 200 windows, it can feel like a bit of a labyrinth as you make your way around.
During your guided mansion tour, you’ll learn all about the history of the plantation, its construction, and how it managed to survive the Civil War.
But it doesn’t stop there.
Once you tour the inside, be sure to take a stroll through the grounds.
The entire property spans an impressive 31 acres.
You could easily get lost if you're not paying attention!
On a beautiful day, take advantage of the benches peppered throughout the grounds.
Sit for a spell and just enjoy the view.
And there are several amenities.
Something for everyone, for sure.
In addition to the swimming pool, and cabana, you'll also find outdoor tennis courts and so much more.
Every inch of the 31 acres is used, but it doesn't feel crowded or forced. Everything flows beautifully and you'll feel like you're in your own little world.
After all that walking, you’re bound to be hungry.
End your evening with a lovely dinner at The Mansion Restaurant, where you can enjoy hearty dishes like butterflied pork chops, roasted duck, shrimp & crab Alfredo and several other signature dishes.
Since you’ve spent the entire day exploring, you might as well book a room for the evening.
Nottoway Plantation has dozens of rooms available to rent, as well as cottages and suites. You’ll find it so cozy and charming, you’ll never want to leave!
Whether you've got an entire weekend to spare or just a few hours, Nottoway Plantation is an ideal spot for anyone looking to get away for a bit.
