For A Peaceful Retreat, Take A Stroll Down The Sankofa Nature Trail In New Orleans
Getting outside and taking a stroll through nature is one of those little pleasures in life that can really give us the boost we need to get through the day. Whether you’re aiming for exercise or a reflective stroll, the Sankofa Nature Trail in New Orleans is the perfect spot, and it’s easily one of the most beautiful hidden gems in New Orleans, and not many people know it even exists! Let’s take a closer look at this beautiful park that’s hiding in plain sight.
Tucked away in the Lower 9th Ward lies a little sliver of beautiful scenery that’s a hidden gem just waiting to be explored, the Sankofa Wetland Park.
The roughly 2-acre park has been a labor of love developed by the Sankofa Community Development Corporation in partnership with the Sewerage and Water Board and the City of New Orleans.
Over 300 bald cypress trees plus over 200 herbaceous trees have been planted into the wetland, transforming the area into what was once an overgrown mess into a beautiful Louisiana landscape.
As you walk through the park, you’ll be surrounded by a sea of emerald greens and beautiful wetlands, all the while just a stone’s throw away from downtown!
And it’s just the beginning for this tiny but mighty park. Sankofa is working to expand the park to 40 acres, creating an even bigger natural oasis for the community to enjoy.
