Not Many People Know The Haunted History Of This Popular Hotel In New Orleans

New Orleans and the paranormal have a long history together. With a city as old as we are, it should come as no surprise that there may be a spirit or two that lingers around. This historic hotel nestled in the heart of the French Quarter is possibly one of the most haunted hotels in the city, and you should check it out.

Nestled away on historic Royal Street, the Hotel Monteleone is one of the last family-owned and operated hotels in New Orleans.

The hotel was opened by Antonio Monteleone in 1886.

A cobbler by trade, Antonio immigrated to New Orleans in 1880, and opened up a cobbler shop on Royal Street. In 1886, he purchased a 64-room hotel on the corner of Royal and Iberville Streets, and that was just the beginning of this landmark hotel in the Crescent City.
Originally named the Commercial Hotel, the hotel has seen many renovations and expansions over the years.

The name of the hotel was changed to Hotel Monteleone in 1908.
One of the main attractions in the hotel is their famous carousel bar.

New Orleans’ only revolving bar has been spinning since 1949, and it’s quite the experience. The 25-seat bar makes one full revolution every 15 minutes, so you’ll barely even notice you’re moving.
While generations of guests have enjoyed the endless amenities the hotel provides, there have been many paranormal experiences throughout the years as well.

There have been many strange occurrences that both the guests and the staff have experiences that simply offer no logical explanation. For instance, there is a restaurant door in the hotel that opens and closes just about every evening, even though the door is locked.
Many people have been in the elevator when it lets them off on the incorrect floor.

And many sightings of ghostly children playing in the halls, that vanish into thin air after being seen. In 2003, the International Society of Paranormal Research spent several days in the hotel, and believe they made contact with over a dozen spirits.
One spirit the team was able to contact was a toddler by the name of Maurice Begere.

Maurice died in the hotel, and his parents would return often in hopes that they would be able to see him one last time. Eventually, Maurice did show himself to his mother, finally giving her closure. Many guests to this day have reported seeing a small toddler near the room where he is said to have died.
