Eat At This Unique Restaurant That’s Steeped In New Orleans History
Many New Orleans buildings have a fascinating history behind them, and that’s one of the best things about living here. This charming little restaurant tucked away on Magazine Street has only been open 14 years, but the building itself has a history that’s almost a century old, and you need to check it out.
La Petite Grocery has been around since 2004, but the history behind the building goes back much further.
Like many New Orleans buildings, this one comes with a fascinating history.
In the late 1800s, John B. Willig built a charming creole-style cottage on the corner of Magazine and what was then called Berlin Street. It has since been renamed General Pershing.
Willig leased the store to a man named Frank W. Mackie and together they opened a business called the Central Tea, Coffee, and Butter Depot. The business was very successful, but unfortunately, in 1908, a fire broke out that spread about two square miles, burning just about everything to the ground. A true New Orleanian, Willig rebuilt, this time better than ever. Complete with a full service grocery store, a barn in the back for delivery carriages, horses and stables, the new building was the first of its kind in the neighborhood for the time. With the new building came a new name: Frank W. Mackie Grocer, and the business ran successfully (under many different owners) until 1982.
Today, the building is a restaurant that honors the history of the building while creating extraordinary dishes that will blow your taste buds away.
La Petite Grocery is the perfect spot to enjoy a delightful dinner before heading off to a show or a movie.
The menu is filled with unique items you just won’t find anywhere else.
Do yourself a favor and get the blue crab beignets as an appetizer for the table. Delicious!
From burgers to lamb loin, there’s something for everyone on the menu.
