The Remarkable Bridge In Kentucky That Everyone Should Visit At Least Once
With many bodies of water throughout our state, bridges are a part of many Kentuckian’s daily lives. We have some incredible ones all over Kentucky from large pedestrian bridges, to those that swing through the woods and make our hearts skip a beat. But one particular bridge in Kentucky has been through quite a lot over the decades and even had to be replaced after an unfortunate incident. The Eggner’s Ferry Bridge that stretches over Kentucky Lake is now better than ever and it’s a remarkable bridge in the Bluegrass that everyone should visit at least once.
The Eggner's Ferry Bridge was originally built in 1932 and looked very different from the image below. The two-lane historic structure was replaced with this remarkable beauty in 2012, thanks to an unusual and unforgettable accident.
The error resulted in the middle section of the bridge collapsing onto the ship. Thankfully, there were no injuries, despite the fact that thousands traveled on this bridge daily.
The bridge remained an odd scene with a missing portion until construction began on the new one in early spring. The goal was to reopen before the busier season and Memorial Day Weekend.
Many commuters dealt with quite the hassle for months as the new bridge was constructed. But the wait was worth it for a new, four-lane beauty that also included a walking and biking path across the lake.
The multi-use trail that has been opened to the public can be seen in the photo below. You can park on either side of the bridge and take the 1.5-mile path across for a unique hike and incredible views. The trail also connects with others within the Land Between the Lakes, so it could really be a part of a much bigger adventure.
The views from the middle of the bridge are amazing, but don't forget to admire the engineering and design of the bridge. The arch is impressive and the wide path makes it easy to cross while still feeling safe and secure.
Another way to experience the bridge is by boat. Kentucky Lake is the largest man-made lake in the state, so there are many ways to access it by boat. The lake is known for its sunsets and you can just imagine what one would be like either with the bridge in the foreground or as viewed from the bridge itself.
The story of how this new version of Eggner's Ferry Bridge came to be may not be ideal, but it's resulted in a remarkable and unique destination in Kentucky. It's now a must see in our state and gives you grand views of Kentucky Lake like never witnessed before.
Eggner’s Ferry Bridge is a crucial part of many lives and it’s also a scenic place to visit for unmatched views of Kentucky Lake and the natural beauty that surrounds it. Have you crossed this stunning bridge? Share your experience with us in the comments!
