The German Christmas Market That’s The First Of Its Kind In Kentucky

There are many holiday traditions and they vary between countries, regions, towns, and even families. Everyone has special ways they spend this season and one of the most popular events in Europe are the Christmas Markets, often called "Christkindlmarkte" (plural) here in the states. Despite the strong German heritage in the Bluegrass State, it can be hard to find this kind of Christmas market in Kentucky, but 3rd Turn Oldham Gardens plays host to one that has become a wonderful Kentucky holiday tradition.

This time of year, all over Europe, you'll find Christmas Markets set up in town squares to celebrate the season.

The one shown here in Germany is an example of the festive nature of these events. Thankfully, a greenhouse brewery in Crestwood, near Louisville, a few years decided it was time Kentucky shared in this tradition.

3rd Turn Oldham Gardens will host its fannual Christkindlmarkt for two weekends beginning on December 1st this year.

It will run from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. each weekend evening and is a wonderful way to celebrate the holidays in Kentucky and create a new tradition.

3rd Turn Oldham Gardens is a former greenhouse, turned brewery, that serves 3rd Turn Brewing beers, bourbon slushes, and a variety of food choices.

In the colder Kentucky months, they warm the outdoors with fire pits and heaters, so don't be afraid to visit when the temperatures drop.

The brewery hosts a number of events throughout the year, such as the one shown below.

The Christkindlmarkt has a similar setup, with many local Kentucky vendors selling crafts and other items that will be perfect for wrapping up your holiday shopping list.

Any good celebration has to include food, and of course, you'll find delicious options at the market.

3rd Turn Oldham Brewing has their standard offerings of things like large soft pretzels, BBQ, nachos, and more, as well as holiday treats that will all be available for purchase.

Every year the entire brewery is filled with glowing lights and festive decor...

...as well as plenty of places to catch up with friends and family during this special holiday season.

The greenhouse atmosphere is lovely in the spring and summer, but it's equally as magical with a soft blanket of snow.

The rustic tables and other furnishings make for the perfect backdrop for Christkindlmarkt.
