Stretched out across 18 miles of Kentucky, the Dawkins Line Rail Trial is a great way to explore the natural beauty and history of the state. Eventually this old rail line will be converted into a 36 mile long trail that can be used by hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. This trail is still fairly new and still a bit of a hidden gem. Most people have no idea that they can walk through an abandoned trail tunnel right here in the Bluegrass State.
Rail-to-trail projects are popping up all across the United States. Right here in Kentucky hikers and bikers are enjoying Dawkins Line Rail Trail.
Take in the beautiful scenery and enjoy the peacefulness of rural Kentucky. In the spring and summer the trail is lined with greenery and native flowers.
When fall arrives, so do the bursts of color from the surrounding foliage. Hiking the trail is a wonderful way to see the changing leaves.
Pieces of forgotten history are scattered along the trail. You can find this abandoned general store around mile 6.
Finally, at mile 15 you can catch your first glimpse of Gun Creek Tunnel. At 662 feet long, it's an impressive sight that you won't want to miss.
The trail is accessible year round and is open daily from dawn until dusk. Many bikers can ride the entirety of the trail in one day.
So grab your walking shoes or your bike and hit the trail. You'll find that no matter how many times you take this trail you'll always be excited to see Gun Creek Tunnel.
