Editor’s Note: The Brookville Hotel is permanently closed.
Welcome to the historic Brookville Hotel, a restaurant thankfully still around today that started off in 1870. The chicken dinners served by staff at the Cowtown Cafe (as it was called originally) just couldn't be beat.
People started coming from far and wide to have them, and the convenience of being part of a hotel only made it better. With the promise of railroad customers, it was supposed to be the perfect spot. Unfortunately, the railroad plans changed and the Brookville Hotel almost didn't make it, but after lots of hard work and a relocation to Abilene, it's been doing well ever since.
Inside, this historic building has beautifully dated carpet and furniture, but it's a sort of antique feeling that matches the food and the atmosphere.
Alongside those famous chicken dinners, you'll usually find homemade relish, sweet-sour coleslaw, mashed potatoes, cream style corn, biscuits, and ice cream for dessert. You need to call and make a reservation, but don't be fooled: this is no formal dining experience.
Though the building has had its damage and renovations through its life, they keep everything as historically accurate as possible, including the rooms people used to rent for the night. It's a wonderful place to see, even if you aren't stopping for a meal.
