The Hervey Preserve & Labyrinth is a 35-acre nature sanctuary and circular stone-path design hidden in northern Indiana that few people know exists. It is situated on the edge of a moderate-sized old town near the River Bluff Trail that is actually quite popular.
It does not take long to traverse this unique labyrinth trail and find the main feature at the center. There is a plaque near a meditation bench that explains the concept behind this incredible design.
This beautiful stone-lined path is a replica of an ancient place of meditation from the 12th century. It symbolizes the sacred pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Traditionally, walkers would carry a stone or other natural object to symbolize their concern or burden.
The object is to be left in part of the rosette pattern at the center of this unique labyrinth trail. The pattern is designed after a labyrinth in France at the Chartres Cathedral, which is still around today.
The labyrinth is 90 feet in diameter and is a wonderful place to sit and meditate or read for an hour or two. Guests enjoy a visit here just about any time of the year.
If you're in the mood for a hike, there is a 1.1-mile nature trail that leads to the more widely used River Bluff Trail. Running perpendicular to the Eel River, this path offers many lovely views.
Built in 2003, this stone path labyrinth is truly one-of-a-kind in Indiana. If you're seeking a place of peace and tranquility, you're sure to find it here.
