Southern Indiana is full of rich history and stunning scenery. Tucked away in the city of Evansville, you'll find the incredible Angel Mounds Loop Trail spanning roughly four miles. This trail is located within Angel Mounds State Memorial Park and will lead you to an unexpected slice of archaeological history: the Angel Mounds.
The Angel Mounds are an official, protected archaeological site that contains remnants of a Native American village from 1100 AD to 1450 AD. The Angel Mounds are one of the best-preserved prehistoric Native American lands in the entire country, and are truly incredible to behold.
While the structures that existed on the mounds have since crumbled, new replicas based on actual remnants and remains were constructed. You'll find this historic replica of the stockade that helped protect the Native Americans along this historic site.
Other structure replicas can also be explored, to give you a better idea of what life was like for these Native Americans, centuries and centuries ago.
You'll also find a roundhouse replica which you can walk inside and explore. Aside from the massive structure replicas, you'll also find there are a total of five large platform shaped mounds and seven slightly smaller mounds in total. The highest mounds were home to the chiefs and higher ranking Native American officials, while the lower mounds were home to the lower class.
