The name of the town commemorates the Battle of the Waters of Merom, a beloved Bible story.
There aren't a whole lot of buildings here; it's mostly land - absolutely gorgeous land.

The Merom Post Office was founded in 1818 and the library was built 100 years later in 1919. Today, only a handful of families live here, but the echoes of the town's past resonate with every resident.

Residents are very proud of this historic role Merom played in a very trying time. To this day, they still pride themselves on kindness and helping their fellow man.
Also interestingly, Merom played a small role in the War of 1812.

William Henry Harrison's soldiers came through the little place on their way to the Battle of Tippecanoe. Once again, residents of the town showed them all the hospitality they could muster.
Nowadays, it's a lot quieter around Merom, but that's all right.

They get a fair share of visitors every year when they hold their annual Merom Bluff Chautauqua at - you guessed it! - Merom Bluff.
The event first began over a century ago, was seemingly forgotten after the 1920s, and came roaring back to life in the 1960s.

It's an educational and social event for Indiana residents. They flock to this beautiful little town in the tens of thousands to attend with their families.

Small-town Indiana is the heart of the Midwest, with hard-working people, and good old-fashioned values. If you are planning a small-town road trip these are some of the best small towns in Indian to visit:

  • Bourbon, IN: With a town motto of "small town, big heart" this charming Indiana town sure lives up to that name. The town took its name from Bourbon County, Kentucky where most of its original settlers came from in 1853. Today, it is a small town of only about 1,700 people.

If you speak to any of the locals who seem to be in the know you might hear the story of how the town got its name. Legend has it, there was a single towering pine tree by Pine Creek in 1851.
