When adventure is calling to you, a visit to Harriman State Park is just what you need. Located within a 16,000-acre wildlife refuge in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, you'll find this beautiful oasis just south of Island Park, Idaho.
To put it simply, Harriman State Park is a nature lover's paradise. Especially renowned for its beautiful scenery and wildlife, the park offers around 22 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback trails that wind through lush meadows and evergreen forests.
If fly fishing is a passion of yours, Harriman will be your haven. The park offers some of the best fly fishing waters on earth. It's home to Henry's Fork, which meanders for eight miles through breathtaking meadows.
The park's acreage was owned by Union Pacific Railroad from 1902 to 1977, serving as a cattle ranch and private retreat for Guggenheim families. Today, visitors can get to know the park's history through tours of the historic Railroad Ranch buildings which are offered in the summer.
There's no doubt that you'll spot some wildlife during your time at Harriman. Henry's Fork attracts myriad animals including moose and elk. Additionally, the park hosts two-thirds of the trumpeter swans that winter in the contiguous United States!
As a year-round oasis, you'll find that there's something to do no matter the season. In wintertime, visitors can explore 24 miles of groomed Nordic skiing trails, snowshoeing, and fat biking. There's even a warming hut that offers spectacular views of wintering wildlife.
