The mountain town of Wallace, Idaho (pop. 946) has a lot going for it. Rich history, small-town charm, spectacular beauty; It's easy to see why it was recently highlighted by Smithsonian Magazine as a must-visit town.
Sitting at the foot of the Bitterroot Mountains, this town is full of character. First of all, it declared itself in 2004 as the "Probable Center of the Universe"...because why not? You can even stand on the exact spot!
Wallace is a town that's especially revered for its history. In fact, the entire town is on the National Register of Historic Places. Featuring original structures from the height of the old mining era, the town offers a rare glimpse back in time.
You could spend an entire weekend taking yourself on a tour of Wallace's historic locations. The Sierra Silver Mine Tour is an iconic experience that takes you underground to a real silver mine.
Other historic destinations include the Union Pacific Depot Museum which shows off the region's railroad history. There's also the Oasis Bordello Museum, which might be the strangest museum you'll ever visit.
Just outside of town, you can explore a historic cemetery, the Pulaski Tunnel Trail, Lookout Pass Ski & Recreation Area, and the Route of the Hiawatha.
