A Nature Lovers Definitive Guide To Montana’s Natural Beauty – Parks, Beaches, Hikes And More!
Montana is known for its wide-open spaces, relatively few inhabitants, and beautiful vistas of the mountains and skies. Known as the “Treasure State,” its greatest treasure is its abundance of beautiful places and outdoor experiences. You can explore landscapes that you can only see in a few other places in the continental United States. From the wind-swept prairies to the snow-covered mountains and caves, Montana offers breathtaking beauty. One thing that people like about Montana is that the air smells fresh and clean, which is a result of an abundance of natural areas and plant life. Few places in the world are as untouched and wild as Montana, and it is a prime destination for any outdoor activity that you care to enjoy. Here are a few of the hidden gems that you must visit.
Sluice Boxes State Park is literally a hidden gem. It gets its name from a piece of equipment used in mining. Many thought that the slope of the cliffs resembled this piece of equipment. It is a natural wonder that consists of limestone cliffs that drop sharply into Belt Creek. It is a favorite destination for tubing down the creek, hiking, and backcountry camping experiences. This is a truly remote location and you need a permit to camp in this park, but the views make the effort worth it. You can enjoy historical abandoned cabins and remnants of the early railroad through the area. Sluice Boxes State Park is the perfect way to begin your Montana backcountry vacation.
A day at the beach is even more spectacular when you can enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains in the distance. The water in Whitefish Lake is clear and a beautiful blue-green color, much like you would expect on a visit to the Caribbean Islands. The white-sand beach might make you forget that you are in Montana, but the beautiful mountains rising up on the opposite shore lets you know that you are still in Big Sky Country. The Whitefish Lake shoreline is seven miles long and is also a popular destination for fishing. The town of Whitefish is a delightful western town with plenty of charm and friendly people. Whitefish Lake beach is an excellent destination for a summer afternoon that the entire family will enjoy, so plan your visit soon.
Montana has its share of gorgeous mountain lakes and it's difficult to pick a favorite, but Lake McDonald can be considered the most jaw-dropping for several reasons. The first is that it is known for its spectacular show at sunrise. The mountains are some of the most photogenic in the entire state, so be sure to bring your camera. The lake has a rocky shore made of rounded stones that reflect the sunlight and create a sparkling effect. On foggy mornings, the mist on the lake is simply magical. Lake McDonald is close to other National Parks, including Glacier National Park, so you can watch the sunrise at the lake and then enjoy a day exploring the area. This is one lake that you should definitely have on your adventure list.
The mountain lakes of Montana have some of the most beautiful islands to explore. We think that Bird Island is one of the most beautiful in the state. Flathead Lake has several islands, but they only allow camping on Bird Island, which is an experience that you are not likely to forget. Seeing the lake from this vantage point gives a unique view that will make you want to put down your phone and drink it all in. The island is also home to a large population of migratory Canadian geese. Some restrictions might be in place during migration and nesting season. There are no amenities and you must kayak or canoe to reach the island, making it an authentic primitive camping experience that you will want to schedule soon.
Montana has endless miles of trails to hike and explore throughout its numerous state parks. If you had to choose one that you must see this year, you might consider Glacier National Park. The most notable trail is the Grinnell Glacier Trail. Many return to hike this trail year after year once they experience it. The trail is over nine miles long and it is a challenging trail that is for more experienced hikers. This trail takes you through some of the most beautiful areas of the park, and if you can manage it, you should see it while the spring wildflowers are in bloom or when the fall foliage is putting on its show. Make sure to book your trip to Glacier National Park and the iconic Grinnell Trail before the winter snows closes it off to visitors.
When it comes to the most beautiful river, the Yellowstone River is the winner hands-down. This is the only river in the lower 48 contiguous states that does not have a dam to slow it down. It runs wild and free, making it the perfect habitat for trout fishing enthusiasts. Many national champions have been caught in these waters. It both flows into and drains Yellowstone Lake, which is the largest water feature in Yellowstone National Park. Don't expect to find a calm swimming hole because the waters are cool and swift. Once the river enters Montana from Wyoming its green waters churn through the Grand Canyon where, in some places, it is a half-mile wide and 1,000 feet deep. It has over 45 named waterfalls and cascades. As it flows across Montana, the waters tame a bit as the river widens and winds through farm country. The Yellowstone River is one of the most exciting destinations that you must see.
Choosing a favorite mountain in Montana is a challenging task. It should not be surprising that a few of our favorites are in Glacier National Park. Among the best in the park are Crowfeet Mountain, Grizzly Mountain, Mad Wolf Mountain, and Rising Moon Mountain. One of our favorites, if you have to choose one, is Mount Grinnell rock formation. It is on the famed Grinnell trail and offers fantastic views of Chief Mountain and McDonald Lake from the summit.
Be sure to see Mount Grinnell when you get a chance. It is close to hotels, tourist attractions, and beaches, making it the perfect adventure destination.
