Hanakapi’ai Falls sits at over 300 feet tall, and cascades into a spectacular swimming hole below. The area surrounding it is lush and verdant, and it’s a cool spot to be in the heat of the day.
The waterfall is located in an area so legendary that even Hollywood can’t stay away.

You’ll be hiking through some of the same areas that show up in Raiders of the Lost Arc, Jurassic Park, and others. It’s a stunning landscape that people just can’t stay away from.
The Hanakapi’ai Falls Trail is impressive: a nine-mile hike, out and back, through a beautiful, sandy coastline, dense jungle, and a steep ascent.

The entire elevation gain is 2,664 ft, so this is not a hike to do without previous experience. Make sure you pack for a full day of hiking in the jungle and let someone know where you are.

This hike can take anywhere from 4-8 hours to complete.

While it’s on the more difficult side to complete, it’s a hike that’s truly unforgettable. The secluded waterfall is well worth the effort it takes to see it up close and in person.
Advanced reservations are now required for anyone hiking out to the falls, except for Hawaiian residents.

Make sure to check in with the state park website to stay up-to-date on any closures or changes along the hike. And steer clear after heavy rainfall, because the trail gets too muddy to pass, and the waters rise high.
