The Tiny Farm Town In Hawaii That’s The Perfect Day Trip Destination
While we love Hawaii’s capital city of Honolulu, as well as the various cities and resort towns that populate the islands’ shores, we are slightly obsessed with the sleepy small towns that can be found across the islands. So, the next time you want to get away from it all and truly relax, consider making a day trip to this tiny little community on Hawaii Island.
A scenic 15-minute drive up Hualalai Road from Kailua-Kona brings to Holualoa, a tiny census-designated place in the heart of Kona coffee country on Hawaii Island that’s full of small-town charm, plenty of history, and creative vibes.
Originally settled as an agricultural community during the days of the Kingdom of Hawaii due to its fertile soil and ample rainfall, Holualoa has been dominated by coffee since it was first planted here in the 1820s. You’ll find history around every corner here, from the historic buildings still standing from when Mamalahoa Highway was the area’s main thoroughfare to the informational signs found through the town’s historic corridor.
Bordered by Kona to the north, Honalo and Kahaluu-Keauhou to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Holualoa is often overlooked by those visiting the island. A true shame, since this small community has so much to offer.
Holualoa is home to approximately 8,500 residents as of the 2010 census, up from 6,000 in 2000. Though this tiny town has grown a lot in the last twenty years or so, the laid-back community is still the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
But that’s not all — this small town plays host to some of the best events on Hawaii Island. There is the enchanting First Friday After Dark, a celebration of art, music, food, and culture, the Annual Coffee & Art Stroll held in conjunction with the Kona Coffee Festival…
...and the Enchanting Annual Holualoa Music & Light Festival, held this weekend, December 1, 2018, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Enjoy the lighting of the town Christmas tree, live music, a visit from Santa, and plenty of shopping!
