Every state, including ours, is known for haunted places, and haunted bridges are particularly popular. Whether a bridge spans a river where someone was murdered long ago or marks the site of a grisly car crash, bridges are a common theme of campfire stories designed to scare young children. One bridge in north Georgia that’s got plenty of haunted rumors swirling around it is the Stovall Mill Covered Bridge near the little town of Helen. It, in fact, is said to be one of the most haunted bridges in Georgia.

  • Did you know there’s also another haunted bridge in Georgia? Yep, Devil’s Bridge in Cochran was once a hotbed of satanic activity. Visitors today, at least those with enough courage, tell of parking their car on the bridge at night (make sure there’s no traffic around!), turning off the engine, and placing their keys on the roof of the vehicle. Wait for a minute or two, and you might see the headlights of a car racing toward you at breakneck speed. Just as you’re about to jump out of the way, it disappears.
  • Tunnel Hill is also said to be teeming with otherworldly spirits, but what you encounter might turn your stomach. The tunnel once served as the battleground during the Civil War, and some of the spirits of the Confederate soldiers are said to remain to this day. If you visit after dark, you might see some of those soldiers lingering in the tunnel, or you may witness their decomposing remains. But, what’s really eerie, is the smell – some tell of smelling rotting flesh. You probably want to have a strong stomach if you visit.

Are there any haunted cemeteries in Georgia?

It should come as little surprise that cemeteries are often brimming with the paranormal. If you really want to increase your chances of experiencing the paranormal, visit one of the many haunted cemeteries in Georgia.

  • Andersonville Prison Farm in Andersonville is home to the restless spirit of a Civil War soldier, who is missing a leg. He’s often seen leaning over a gravesite. Those who visit tell of a heavy feeling of grief.
  • If you visit Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, listen for the sound of Confederate soldiers calling out for their loved ones. You might not see any spirits at the cemetery, but chances are pretty good you’ll hear them.
