Take The Southwest Wisconsin Wine Trail For An Unforgettable Experience
Back in April we told you about the Great River Road Wine Trail and the Door County Wine Trolley.
But those are far from the only places to sample amazing wine in the great state of Wisconsin. This set of wineries and vineyards in the southwest part of the state are located in some of the most beautiful areas.
Most importantly, though, is that the rough outline of this wine trail lines up fairly perfectly with Wisconsin Cheese Trail we told you about to start the year. There's pretty much no better way to spend a weekend in Wisconsin than doing this small circle southwest of Madison and filling up on the best wine and cheese the Dairy State has to offer.
Though the member wineries vary a bit from year to year, there are actually quite a few different vineyards in this small region to visit and enjoy.
1. Weggy Winery - Muscoda
Located just outside Richland Center in the middle of the state, Weggy Winery produces their wine in a 1930's dairy barn. They have one of the biggest vineyards in the state, with 16 acres and more than 11,00 vines.
Located at 30940 Oakridge Dr, Muscoda, WI 53573.
2. Spurgeon Vineyards and Winery - Highland
Spurgeon takes advantage of the hills in the region to give their grapes maximum exposure. They make 21 different wines and have been at it sine 1981.
Located at 16008 Pine Tree Rd, Highland, WI 53543.
3. Whispering Winds Winery - Fennimore
What started as a hobby has grown to a 2,000 gallon a year business outside of Fennimore. The focus on small, quality batches stands out at Whispering Winds.Located at 13541 Blue School Rd., Fennimore, WI 53809.
4. Whispering Bluffs Winery - Potosi
The tasting room is located right across from Potosi Brewery, but the grapes are grown on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi - one of the most gorgeous views anywhere. The location is great for sun exposure and the River helps keep the air warm. The store is located in a turn of the century building from 1902. This area is nothing but quaint charm.
Located at 196 S Main St, Potosi, WI 53820.
5. Bauer-Kearns Winery - Platteville
These folks have a stellar 50 acres of beautiful land where not only can you find grapes, but you can fish, as well. Always call ahead at this small winery to make sure someone is there to accommodate you.
Located at 19245 West Mound Rd - Platteville, WI 53818.
6. Hawk's Mill Winehaus - New Glarus
One of the newer vineyards in the state, in just two years these folks have already made their mark. New Glarus is already a spectacular place to day trip, but the addition the vineyard just makes it that much more special.
Located at 500 1st St, New Glarus, WI 53574.
7. Fisher King Winery - Verona
Before you circle back into Madison, this little winery in Verona is worth a stop. This urban winemaker is using small batches and local products to highlight hand-made, batch craft wine.
Located at 1105 Laser Street, Verona, WI 53593.
