You only get a small idea of what's in store when you pull up to the craggy outside of Wausau Mine Company. But once you go in, you'll be mesmerized by the amazing decor.

This place is actually as awesome and authentic as you can get, since the tools, carts and other artifacts you find here are genuine and not recreations. A generous donation means that while this is a fun, themed restaurant, it's also an important history-keeper and story-teller about life in this part of the state.

This is no flimsy attempt at a theme - they go all in. From jagged rocks on the walls in the bathrooms to full cave-like installations and wooden pieces of a mine shaft, this place really goes all out.

On its own, Wausau Mine Company would be worth talking about, but we haven't even gotten to the food. The menu here manages to perfectly walk the line of providing appealing food for both the kids and the adults. This is no measly four-dish kids menu. You'd keep coming back to this place even if there wasn't a single thing on the walls, that's how good the food is.

They're known for their pizza and that's partly because they make the dough fresh in house every day. The kind of care and detail that comes with house-prepping items that most places bring in pre-made shows in the whole menu and it's what makes this place so good.

No matter what you're craving, you'll find something amazing to satisfy you on the menu here. Sure, the pizza's great, but may I suggest getting that for the table to share as an appetizer so you also get to try the fabulousness on the rest of the menu? This awesome spot has been around in one form or another since 1915. What used to be a roadhouse is now the coolest, most interesting and delicious restaurant in all of central Wisconsin.
