The Overstuffed Sandwiches From This Washington Deli Are the Stuff of Dreams
Bold, indulgent, and stuffed to perfection, this Ballard gem reinvents a lunch classic with unapologetic, five-star creativity.
Despite what you might have heard, Seattle isn’t just raincoats, coffee culture, and the Space Needle. It’s a city that thrives on contradictions: industrial yet artistic, grungy yet refined, gray skies but technicolor sunsets. Its dining scene is just as vibrant — a melting pot of fresh-caught seafood, Asian-fusion brilliance, and, increasingly, over-the-top comfort food. And tucked away in Ballard, where the craft beer flows as freely as the Puget Sound breeze, there’s a sandwich shop that’s rewriting the rules on what a handheld meal can be.
Although "handheld" might be a bit of a stretch.
Enter Mean Sandwich, the unapologetically bold eatery that’s perfect for anyone who believes that sandwiches should be bigger than your face and pack more punch than a double shot of espresso on a Monday morning. Forget sad desk lunches and ho-hum hoagies, Seattleites — this is where sandwiches go to get a personality makeover!
Here, sandwiches aren’t a sidekick — they’re the main event, and from the moment you step inside (or maybe even before then), you know you’re in for something different. With a bold, hair band-inspired rig parked outside, complete with Mean Sandwich's memorable open-mouth logo, it's clear that this is no ordinary sub shop.
Inside, the vibe is wonderfully funky, with cheeky branding and a cozy, no-frills setup that says, “The food speaks for itself.” Behind the menu were Kevin and Alex Pemoulie, owners/culinary rock stars who channeled their East Coast Momofuku-honed expertise into the art of the sandwich, sans the traditional specs. More recently, the sandwich-loving Crookston brothers have taken over the reins and are continuing to kick the art of the 'wich up a few notches.
If you've ever had a hankering for a massive sandwich — meaning, seriously massive — you know that there are a few different approaches to supersizing this lunchbox favorite. There are the obscenely tall sandwiches, piled high with so many outrageous layers, add-ons, and meat options that it's a toppled Jenga stack just waiting to happen. Then, there are the plate-sized behemoths — Texas-inspired foodie challenges that require the unfortunate use of a fork unless you're a serious powerlifter with uncanny hand strength, but rarely deliver in terms of flavor.
Then, there are the sammies at Mean Sandwich.
Huge? Yes. Overflowing? Absolutely. Raved-about? Deservingly so.
But these hunger-crushing bad boys aren't just piled high with random, increasingly absurd combinations of various meats. The sandwiches at Mean Sandwich are thoughtful, unexpected, and completely out-of-this-world. They're also overstuffed to perfection, to the point of becoming a second (or even third) meal, but yet wildly creative (and dare we say beautiful?) in execution, bursting with unique flavors, five-star combinations, and an entrée-like experience in semi-handheld form.
The Mean Sandwich itself is a juicy, savory beast, starring thick-cut corned beef that’s been brined and cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection. It’s layered with vibrant pickled cabbage for crunch (a Mean Sandwich staple), mustard for kick, and a drizzle of mint-maple syrup that sounds chaotic but tastes like pure magic. For the more refined crowd, there’s the Steak Tartare Club, an outrageous mash-up of silky raw beef, bacon, tomato, and yuzu kosho mayo that defies logic but delivers big time. Even the Sardine Sandwich — a risky menu item anywhere — is a revelation, balancing briny fish with sharp, acidic garnishes.
Over the years, numerous drool-inducing specials and inventive new sammies and subs have graced the Mean menu with their presence, like the Crispy Pork Po'Boy, Mean Muffaletta, NYT Chicken Parm, Beef Quesobirra Torta, and so much more. But before you can wistfully reminisce about a past love, there's always something new and wildly delicious on deck to ramp up your appetite.
It's hard to choose a favorite, especially with new options constantly making their mark. Our current pick? The Fried Chicken Po'Boy: dredged, deep-fried, and beautifully dressed with a spicy combo of Calabrian chili relish and hot lemon-pepper mayo. It's a mountain of sandwich, to be sure. But every bite makes you rethink everything you thought a sandwich could be in the best, most superlative way possible.
The Pemoulies originally found their groove on the East Coast, where they honed their palates and ran a high-end restaurant, eventually moving cross-country to take over a long-standing shop on Ballard's Leary Way in 2017. Today, with the Crookston brothers now at the helm, this artful sandwich shop still serves up majorly innovative (and majorly filling) eats, plus a few new extras, much to the delight of Seattle's gastropub and sandwich-loving crowd.
It’s not just about what’s between the bread, though. Even the simplest elements, like their Skins & Ins potatoes, are elevated. The dish pairs fried potato skins and fluffy centers fried in an addictive seasoning blend that might just overshadow your main order. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, their cinnamon bread pudding — crafted from leftover sandwich rolls — is a warm, gooey exclamation point on the meal.
As for drinks, you’re in prime brewery territory, so grab a craft beer to wash it all down, or try one of their rotating house sodas for something non-alcoholic but just as fun. The shop’s cozy digs and "backyard" patio dining make it easy to settle in if you choose.
In a city where numerous independent delis all boast their own unique take on the classic sandwich, Mean Sandwich stands out. While we're all about the portions (stuffed-to-the-brim) and flavors (absolutely next-level), we're also major fans of the heart behind Mean Sandwich. After all, what's not to love about a family sandwich shop breaking the mold and delivering sublime sandwich perfection? Even a quick scroll through their social media will have you hooked!
Ballard has plenty of great eats and drinks, but if you’re hungry for something big, bold, and elevated, Mean Sandwich is waiting. Just make sure you bring your appetite. And maybe a bib.
