Europeans have long embraced the practice of al fresco dining. Being Dutch myself, I can say that— regardless of the season— in the evening, you'll find Dutch folks crowding local beer terraces and chatting with friends, family, and coworkers after work. In recent years, Americans have embraced this approach to dining, with restauranteurs scrambling to erect patios and terraces to meet the growing demand to dine en plein air. Now, what about a Washington winery with outdoor seating? Admittedly, options abound, but my favorite spot is Treveri Cellars in Wapato. Starting every November, they transform their gorgeous patio into a cozy village of igloos!
Since its debut in 2010, Treveri Cellars has become synonymous with fine, sparkling wine. Driven by the passion of the Grieb family, who oversees the wine-making process from vineyard to cork-pop, this family-run operation is committed to sustainability, cutting no corners in creating their high-end product.
If there was ever an establishment made for outdoor seating, it's Treveri. Situated with a panoramic outlook over its grapevines and surrounding Wapato, you'll be drinking views as much as you'll be drinking wine.
Still, however well-suited its climate for growing the grape varietals championed by Treveri, with average winter lows of 25°F, Wapato isn't suitable for year-round al fresco seating.
To solve this issue, Treveri introduced the Bubbles, a collection of transparent igloos that occupy the patio during winter months. The clear material protects guests' view of the stunning area while keeping the elements at bay.
At night, the Bubbles are lit cozily by twinkle lights and charming chandeliers suspended overhead. While the plastic wouldn't provide much insulation on its own, the igloos are kept generously warm by space heaters.
This attention to detail creates a dining experience like no other. Where else can you drink award-winning wine while watching stars sparkling in the Wapato night sky? Just be sure to reserve your spot in advance! The Bubbles are in high demand.
Admittedly, I'm no wine connoisseur. If you're similarly unable to identify subtle notes in fine Rosé, don't be discouraged! In addition to their impressive wine selection, Treveri has a delicious menu. My personal favorite is the indulgent charcuterie board.
If you're on the hunt for a Washington winery with outdoor seating, look no further than Treveri Cellars. Where else can you drink a glass of sparkling wine beneath sparkling stars? If you remain unconvinced as to the merits of dining en plein air, feel free to pack your cold-weather supplies. Still, I think if you give the experience a chance, you'll be a lifetime convert.
