We go to restaurants for the food (and the break from cooking), but it doesn't hurt when our eatery of choice happens to provide a totally unique dining experience. For the Hi Life, that means a rotating themed menu and a location in a 108-year-old firehouse. Luckily, aside from these features, the food also happens to be excellent.
The Hi-Life is located in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood in a building that once housed Firehouse No. 18.
Firehouse No. 18 was built in 1911 by Bebb and Mendel, two historic Seattle architects. It served as the firehouse until 1976, when the station was retired by the city after being deemed surplus property.
Inside, you'll find an eclectic mix of historic fixtures, local art, and themed decor.
While this might sound like an odd combination, it actually works quite well. The Hi-Life is completely charming.
The eatery is owned by Peter Levy of Chow Foods, a successful group of local restaurants popular with locals and tourists alike.
While each Chow Foods location offers its own unique dining experience, there are a few menu items you'll find at most, if not all of them.
Aside from the classic menu items, you'll find a seasonal selection of common delicacies that share a common theme.
And while the themes might range from Southern cuisine to Argentinian classics, the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced whenever possible.
The food menu isn't the only thing that changes seasonally.
The Hi Life has a full bar, and their seasonal happy hour specials always include creative specialty cocktails.
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, and they're all phenomenal... but the breakfasts here are to die for.
From pancakes and waffles to creative Benedicts, you'll find a little bit of everything here. This is House Hot Smoked Salmon Benedict, and it tastes even better than it looks.
The Hi Life is totally kid-friendly, with special menus for your little ones.
That being said, no one will judge you for ordering something as delicious as a grilled cheese as an adult.
The Hi Life is open 8:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. Sunday - Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays, they're open until 11.
The next time you're in Seattle, give this place a try. You can go 50 different times and order 50 different things here, which is part of the appeal.
Address:5425 Russell Avenue NW, Seattle, WA, 98107
