Moab Diner Is a Utah Retro Gem That’ll Whisk You Back to the Sock Hop Days

Moab Diner is one of the best retro places in Utah. The vintage memorabilia and classic American eats and treats will take you back to yesteryear.

Whether you were born in the ‘50s or not, I think the retro age is universally nostalgic. The aesthetic of sock hops, soda fountains, and jukebox boxes represents an idyllic time when life’s simple pleasures were cherished. Luckily, places like the Moab Diner keep the charm of this bygone era alive. One of the best diners in Utah, this quaint and cozy restaurant offers a blast from the past with a vintage atmosphere and all-American eats, including burgers, roast beef, and, of course, sweet treats like homemade pie and hot fudge sundaes.

As soon as you walk through the doors of the Moab Diner, located on Main Street in the heart of Moab, Utah, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Between the vintage memorabilia and seats upholstered with red leather, it’s like a scene from Grease or When Harry Met Sally — except, luckily for us, this is no movie.

The diner opened in the early 1960s as the Poor Boy Drive-Inn, where carhops on roller skates served 29-cent hamburgers to Moab residents in classic cars. After the drive-in closed, Grand Ice Cream Parlour took its place, and in 1993, Geoff and Teri Thomas purchased the business to bring their vision for the Moab Diner to life. The current owners, Justin and Hanah Cosenza, took over in 2019, with a mission to preserve the family business and maintain the original values the diner was built on.

Once you're seated, it's time to look at the menu. In keeping with diner tradition, there are countless options to choose from, whether you come for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Most diners are known for their breakfast, and the Moab Diner is no exception. If you like to start the day with something sweet, you can't go wrong with pancakes or French toast. Prefer savory? Steak and eggs, omelets, and biscuits with gravy are all classics that never disappoint.

For lunch and dinner, choose from tried-and-true staples, including burgers, hot and cold sandwiches, chicken-fried steak, liver and onions, fish and chips, and more.

No matter what you order, make sure to save room for dessert. Diner breakfast is great, but nothing compares to the nostalgic feeling of sipping an old-fashioned milkshake or enjoying a classic banana split.

Over two dozen ice cream flavors satisfy every sweet tooth, whether you prefer to keep it simple with vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry, or mix it up with chocolate brownie extreme, pecan praline, or huckleberry. You can get your ice cream in a cone, as a malt, a milkshake, or in sundae or banana split form. Tucking into a double scoop topped with hot fudge sauce, crushed nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry will whisk you back to yesteryear in a heartbeat. The brown butter cake sundae is less traditional, but don't let that deter you because it's sinfully delicious.
