Texas’ First-Ever Bookstore Speakeasy Is Open And It Will Be Your New Favorite Place To Grab A Drink

Bookstore cafes are cool, but a bookstore speakeasy in Texas? That’s what I’m talking about. Blackbird Books & Spirits in Belton is hidden behind a painting in a historic building, and it’s where bookworms and craft cocktail aficionados (and those who fall into both camps!) come together to laugh, read, drink, eat, and have an overall great time.

Texas has a plethora of both bookstores and speakeasies, but putting the two together is a concept that is only just now coming to fruition.

Tucked away in the Katy building of the historic Belton MK&T Depot, The Blackbird Books & Spirits is hiding behind a painting of Texas' first female governor, Miriam “Ma” Ferguson. The bookstore/bar hybrid first opened in June 2023 and is already a bit hit among locals (after all, books and boozy beverages just seem to go together, am I right?).

The vibe is moody and dramatic, yet also relaxing and cozy. Black walls, dim lighting, and an electric fireplace create an atmosphere that makes you want to curl up on the couch or in a leather armchair and escape reality as you dive into a good read.

On the shelves, you'll see everything from iconic classics to romance to young adult (yes, the speakeasy is teen-friendly!).

As for the drink menu, it features lots of fun cocktails, with bartenders mixing up everything from banana pudding martinis to gin and juice to a delightful smoked rosemary whiskey sour.

There are also plenty of non-alcoholic options such as mocktails, coffee, and tea.

Blackbird also serves foods such as bagels and pastries, so you can enjoy a delicious light bite while devouring your book of choice.

The pastries are French-inspired and include everything from tarts to almond croissants.

Please note that pastries are only available on weekends.

Visit the Blackbird Books & Spirits Facebook page for more information about the speakeasy, including current hours of operation and a schedule of upcoming events (such as trivia nights).
