Hiding in an unsuspecting League City shopping center, Pierogi Queen is harboring a portal that leads straight to Eastern Europe. In both atmosphere and cuisine, this under-the-radar eatery brings a little slice of Polish authenticity right here to Houston.

Pierogies, or Polish dumplings, are little bite-sized pieces of starchy heaven. They come either boiled or pan-fried, each method bringing out completely different aspects and flavors of the very same ingredients.

Industrial-sized cookie sheets are used to shape hundreds of pierogies at a time, ensuring plenty extra for the freezer stock. That's right -- bring home your favorite flavors by the dozen, so you'll only have to go as far as the kitchen when the craving strikes. The price is usually about $9 for 12, and cooking directions are printed on the package.

Many different flavors are offered on a rotating basis, with some of the usual suspects being loaded baked potato, pork & beef, and potato & cheese. You'll typically see a couple vegan options on the menu, as well, like sauerkraut & onion and spicy black bean.

Although we could certainly make a meal out of pierogies alone, that wouldn't allow for the full experience of what this hole-in-the-wall has to offer. Borscht, a traditional Slavic soup that gets its striking red color from beetroots, is the perfect accompaniment to any Polish meal.

Other dishes include cabbage rolls, Polish fries, Kielbasa sausage, and several other scrumptious delicacies. After just one meal here, your taste buds will have traveled halfway across the world and back without ever leaving Texas.

Let's not forget about dessert! Either stick with the pierogi theme or try out Blintzes, which swap the dumplings for crepes. Both are topped with strawberry sauce and dusted with powdered sugar.
