When it comes to iconic foods in Texas, chicken-fried steak is near, if not on, the top of the list. Some of the best chicken-fried steak in Texas is served up at Mel's Country Cafe in Tomball, and locals can't get enough. It's truly perfect in every way - I can't wait for you to take that first bite!
Located in Tomball, Mel’s Country Cafe has been family-owned and operated since it first opened in 1977. The restaurant made a name for itself by only using ingredients from local farms, and not much has changed over the years.
Upon stepping inside, you’ll immediately feel right at home. From the red and white checkered tablecloths to the farmhouse decor, eating at Mel’s is like sitting down for Sunday supper at your grandma’s house.
On the menu, you’ll see all sorts of Southern comfort foods like fried green tomatoes, burgers, catfish, and more. The fried chicken is also out of this world (which makes perfect sense because the restaurant used to be called “Mel’s Fried Chicken!”.
If you only ever listen to me this once, however, I implore you to try the chicken-fried steak. As you probably know, a good chicken-fried steak is a bit like a needle in a haystack, and Mel’s hits the nail on the head.
The CFS comes in small and large portions - but even Mel’s cautions that its “small” is a large at most restaurants! A crisp exterior gives way to the juiciest, most tender steak you’ll ever eat, and the cream gravy on top is the proverbial icing on the cake.
All entrees (including CFS) come with two sides, which include everything from fried okra to a side salad to mashed potatoes. You can also get your CFS in sandwich or salad form if you’re feeling something a bit different!
