The oldest restaurant in San Antonio, Schilo's dates to 1917.
Owners "Papa" Fritz and Mama Schilo originally intended for the restaurant to serve as a saloon - but that all changed once patrons got a taste of Mama's traditional German cooking.
Schilo's was moved to its current location - a former currency exchange bank - in 1942. The vault is now a walk-in cooler!
Today, the Schilo family no longer owns the deli, but their influence is still there - even in the tiniest of details.
In terms of the menu, think of it as authentic German flair with a unique Texas twist.
You'll see all the classics like Reuben sandwiches and bratwurst, plus juicy burgers served on stout beer buns.
From schnitzel to soft pretzels with homemade hot mustard, a meal at Schilo's is a trip back to the Old World.
The sides, including German potato salad and red cabbage, are equally as incredible. Top it all off with a frosty mug of the restaurant's famous root beer, which took the place of regular beer during Prohibition.
Schilo's even serves breakfast! If you've never started your day with eggs and a side of bratwurst, we highly recommend doing so.
Address: 424 East Commerce Street, San Antonio, TX 78205.
Hours are 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. daily.
