This Speakeasy Hidden in a Former Bookstore in Texas Is Perfect for a Date Night
Behind the shelves of a former bookstore lies a hidden Texas speakeasy where craft cocktails, dim lighting, and vintage charm set the scene for the perfect date night.
I've never been to a speakeasy (although it's on my bucket list!), but I am an avid reader, so when I found a place that offers the best of both worlds, I knew I had to write about it. Thompson's Bookstore in Fort Worth is a unique speakeasy in Texas that takes visitors through a secret door disguised as a bookcase into a mysterious, swanky world where the Roaring Twenties have never left.
Located in the historic Vybek building in Fort Worth, Thompson's Bookstore looks like an ordinary bookstore on the outside, but those in the know ... well, know better.
The building has been around since the 1890s, formerly serving as a bookstore and a pharmacy before its current life as a speakeasy, cigar lounge, and event space.
The first level of the building still looks like a bookstore, and that was done on purpose. Perfect for events such as literary gatherings, cocktail parties, and receptions, this cozy space brings the magic of a small, local bookstore to life.
One bookcase has a secret: it moonlights as a hidden door that leads to a Prohibition-style speakeasy where the Roaring Twenties are still alive and well. Keep in mind, however, that you will need the password of the week to access the speakeasy. This can be found on the Thompson's Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Throw on something snazzy and lose yourself in the sleek ambiance, complete with dim lighting, modern-vintage decor, and jazz music. The speakeasy can be rented for special events, but it is also open to the public on select days of the week.
Whether you grab a seat at the bar or slink into a plush red booth, prepare to be transported back to a bygone era full of mystery and intrigue. As far as the drink selection, you'll see everything from tequila to whiskey to wine to classic cocktails. No matter what you're in the mood for, rest assured, it's on the menu.
Oh, and let's not forget about these smiling faces staring at you while you sip your drink. It wouldn't be a true speakeasy experience without them!
When you're finally ready to call it a night, you'll ascend the basement stairs and make your way back through the secret door from which you came. The only difference is that you'll be leaving with a pocketbook full of new memories that are sure to never be forgotten.
For even more excitement, Thompson's Bookstore also hosts various classes and activities on the events floor of the building. And for even more comfort, luxury, and sophistication, step into the Cigar Lounge at Thompson’s. With four floors of this historic building, and a vibe you won’t find just anywhere in Fort Worth, Thompson’s Bookstore is truly one-of-a-kind. Make sure to visit the Thompson's Bookstore website or the Thompson's Bookstore Facebook page for more information, including the most current hours of the speakeasy.
