Whenever you travel to an area, it can be really fun to immerse yourself in the culture around you. Curious explorers such as myself often have questions like: What are the people like? What is the unique feel of the area? How do people live? What does it sound like? I truly believe each town or region offers a variety of experiences, and the best way to learn is to be completely submerged into the culture. There is a unique place on the edge of the Smoky Mountains that can provide you with that exact experience: The Abbey in Townsend, Tennessee.
At first glance, you would not think The Abbey would offer a full pub experience because for many years this building was used as a wedding chapel.
In years past this served as a destination for love, union, and celebration, as countless couples shared their vows. For those familiar with the Appalachian ways of old, this building will look very familiar, and fits nicely as in the Smoky Mountain area. Lots of cabins have a similar look and harken back to a simpler time. After serving the community for several years, this wedding venue was closed and left completely unused. The current owners had a spark of creativity and decided to give this beautiful location new life, and a new purpose. Soon the doors were open again to not just invite excited young couples looking to tie the knot, but for everyone to enjoy an authentic Appalachian restaurant experience.
The original design is still very much in use and stunningly beautiful.
The pews have been transformed into benches for long tables designated for visitors to sit back, relax, and enjoy each other's company. The vaulted ceilings have curved exposed beams and the brilliant wooden floors provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
You can also sit outside to enjoy the wonderful weather we have here in Tennessee.
The river runs right behind the property, not only providing a pleasant view but also the sweet sound of running water trickling from the mountains. On a warm summer day, watch as people float downstream on tubes, or see local fishermen casting a line near the edge of the water.
Musicians have long been inspired by the natural beauty and have produced a unique sound in this region unlike anywhere else found around the world.
The whole idea of this restaurant is to share and fellowship with one another.
Folks may enter the room one night as total strangers, but leave as friends. Like most places in Tennessee, no one is ever really in a rush. Sit down, stay awhile, and meet some new people. The menu even reflects this lifestyle with sharable offerings like flatbread pizza, wings, and standard pub fare.
Keep an eye out for the specials that will change daily because you never know what kind of delicious treat might be on the menu that day.
Whether you are looking to indulge in your favorite flavors, or looking to try something new there are bound to be some Appalachian dishes that will suit you well. As good as the food, is nothing quite beats the time of fellowship that can be had with some of the greatest local people you haven’t met yet.
