A puff of smoke rises from a smoker and there is hardly a more alluring scent than that. Slow-cooked, perfectly smoked meats isn't simply part of Tennessee cuisine; it's part of our very culture. In Memphis, barbecuing is serious business. The city is widely known across the country for having some of the best-tasting BBQ around. Corky’s Ribs & BBQ has made the claim to be the king of Memphis-style BBQ -- and they certainly have quite a following to back it up. Are they really the king? To find out, of course, you will just have to go and partake in their delicious Tennessee 'cue.
The genesis of Corky’s all started just like any good story, with one man and a big dream.
Don Pelts wanted to create a mouth-watering BBQ place where folks could go and sit down with friends and enjoy a meal. This was a big dream, but the opportunity presented itself -- and in 1984 the first Corky’s location was opened in Memphis. It was a huge success: people could not get enough of the fall-off-the-bone ribs and delicious smoky taste.
Today, there are several locations spanning from Pigeon Forge to Brentwood and they even opened up several locations outside of Tennessee. In short, folks just can't get enough of this TN 'cue!
A unique feature and one innovative strategy that sets Corky’s apart is the drive-thru.
It’s not every day you get to see a fine BBQ place offering quick service like that. But the hard work has been done and the slow-cooked meats have just been waiting for folks to take "to go" -- so stop on by and rest assured your meal will still be hot and fresh!
Another innovative aspect of Corky’s was when they started shipping their meals.
Right now, you can order online and have your 'cue shipped to you... but that wasn’t a very common practice in the late '80s. Before the internet was widely used and everyday conveniences were not around, there was Corky’s leading the world in new and innovative practices that have since become an industry standard.
Back to the barbecue. Once people tasted the ribs, they couldn’t get enough. And... can you blame them, with barbecue this perfect?
When you think about it, BBQ is deeply rooted in Tennessee culture. This makes sense, because at the heart of it, barbecue is about food and fellowship. Whether it's a backyard barbecue or church picnic, it all harkens back to the concept of Southern hospitality. And rallying around a full table of smoked meats... what could be better?
Have you tried Corky’s Ribs & BBQ before? Are they the undisputed king of Memphis-Style BBQ? If you haven’t been, I highly encourage you to give them a try.
