10 Foods That Pittsburghers Crave When They Leave Pittsburgh

Leaving Pittsburgh - even if just for a vacation - sure can tug at our heartstrings. We leave behind the city we love, the people, the natural beauty, and the food. Sure, we might be able to get some of the foods Pittsburghers crave when they leave Pittsburgh in other places. Somehow, however, it just isn't the same.

1. Chipped chopped ham sandwiches

Isaly's was the place to go in the Burgh for decades. And, one of the most popular foods - that Pittsburghers still crave - was the chipped chopped ham. Nothing tastes better than chipped chopped ham on a fresh roll. How did you eat your chipped chopped ham sandwiches?

2. Potato Patch fries

What's the one place in Kennywood that always has a long line? The Potato Patch. And, there's a pretty good reason for that. French fries. Smothered in cheese and topped with bacon. Or not. Anyway you look at it, it's pretty common to crave Potato Patch fries when we're away from the Burgh.

3. The Smiley Cookie

Nothing says Pittsburgh like a Smiley cookie after dinner at Eat 'N Park. Even those who don't live in Pittsburgh anymore can still satisfy their Smiley cookie craving. Eat 'N Park now ships them to cookie lovers.

4. Wholey’s fish sandwich

You just won't get a fish sandwich like you do at Wholey's anywhere else. The award-winning sandwich has even been named the best local fish sandwich by Pittsburgh City Paper.

5. The Pittsburgh Salad

Okay, so technically you can create your own Pittsburgh Salad when you're far from home. Just add some fries to your salad, right? But, it just doesn't taste the same as a Pittsburgh Salad - topped with plenty of vegetables and golden fries - that you order in Pittsburgh.

6. Primanti Brothers coleslaw & fries topped sandwich

A sandwich is just a sandwich unless it's topped with fries and coleslaw. Then it's a scrumptious Pittsburgh original - courtesy of Primanti Brothers - that just can't be duplicated.

7. Fried zucchini

Fried zucchini - like pierogies - is one of Pittsburgh's favorites. They make the perfect appetizer or, if you're in the mood for a light meal, they're the perfect entree.

8. Mancini’s Bread

What's better than jumbo (remember that?) hugged between two pieces of fresh Mancini's bread? What other bread is unique to Pittsburgh that you crave when you're away from the Burgh?

9. Turner Dairy's Iced Tea

Who remembers drinking Turner Dairy's iced tea at lunch in high school? Even as adults, nothing goes better with lunch than Pittsburgh's most popular iced tea, wouldn't you say?

10. Sarris’ chocolate covered pretzels

Hershey might be king for some of the state. But, for Pittsburghers? Nothing tops Sarris Candies - from the chocolate covered pretzels and peanut butter meltaways to chocolate covered popcorn and coconut clusters, it's just what we crave.
