When I’m In A Fiesta Mood, I Head To This Popular Portland, Oregon Taqueria

When I'm in a festive mood, I head to Por Que No, a local favorite taqueria that serves up fresh, authentic Mexican fare—and killer margaritas. I've been going to this outstanding taco spot for years, initially at the North Mississippi Avenue location and, more recently the Southeast Hawthorne Avenue outpost. Both are perfect for a quick bite or a larger meal. I particularly love the expansive seating options at the Hawthorne location, which include inside seats in the front of the restaurant and several covered inside-outside dining areas in the back.

There's also outside seating in front of the restaurant when the weather allows.

This spot is very popular, so expect a wait at high-demand times like weekends.

You can't go wrong with any of Por Que No's tacos. I particularly like the carnitas and pollo verde.

When you arrive, grab a menu and decide what to order while waiting in line.

Servers will bring your food to your table.

Por Que No has a delicious array of agua frescas (fresh fruit juices). I usually get a combination.

You can also make one into a margarita.

The colorful inside dining room space is a fun place to sit.

On warm days, the front of the restaurant slides away to create a big open window.

I usually head to one of the dining areas in the back.

Don't forget to order some fresh-made salsas to add to your meal.

I always order the exceptional guacamole and chips.

Taco specials like chicken fajita are always a good choice.

Other offerings I recommend are the flautas (I like the veggie and chicken options), tamales, and bowls.

If chicken enchiladas are the special of the day, I always order them.

My kids love the bowl of dum-dums for a little sweet treat on the way out.

The bottom line is that eating at Por Que No is both fun and delicious, every time. The food also travels and reheats well, so I often pick up tacos to go—takeout is also a great way to beat the crowds if there's a long line.
