There are restaurants and dishes that are recreated from city to city. And then there are the ones that only live in good old Columbus, the ones that might have food cousins in other places, but none are quite like the original. Here are eight foods that every Columbusites misses when they travel.
1. Northstar Burger from Northstar Cafe
The Northstar Burger is oh so delicious and also absolutely vegetarian. It's made with organic brown rice, black beans, and beets, then topped with white cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickle, and onion. This cafe is famous for its vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free dishes, but even folks without these dietary preferences can't get enough of this burger.
2. Marzipan Peach from Mozart's
Having traveled all the way from Austria, this fantastic pastry is one of Columbus's most famous delicacies. This treat has it all: buttercream and raspberry preserves inside of a pastry shell, delicately wrapped in almond marzipan. You know you want one!
3. Pizza from Mikey's Late Night Slice
It's a delicious slice of pizza, available for you at just about any time of day and night at multiple locations. Oh, and you’re served super quick; what’s not to love? Mikey's makes fantastic pizza with a fluffy crust, delicious sauce and cheese, and excellent toppings.
4. Cream Puffs from Schmidt's
The Cream Puff at Schmidt's is an enormous portion of absolute deliciousness. It's a wonderful blob of decadent cream hiding inside of a fluffy scrumptious pastry shell. Don't eat it alone, but do get one and share it with friends - they will never forget it.
5. The Gut Buster from Jack & Benny's
The famous Gut Buster is a stack of hash browns, a potato pancake, bacon, ham, eggs, and a sausage patty, all topped with sausage gravy. It's the most fantastic breakfast you could imagine, and it is perfect for those really rough mornings.
6. Macarons from Pistacia Vera
These colorful flavorful fun delights are a favorite among Columbusites - to eat and to gift. The macarons come in all sorts of flavors, and you can get the kind of assortment that's just right for you. They're yummy and pretty!
7. Tomato Basil Soup from La Chatelaine
Ok, I know what you're thinking - everyone can serve a good Tomato Basil Soup. But have you tried this one? It is the most perfect rendition of this great dish, with the fresh flavorful taste of tomatoes, accompanied by a fragrant basil and with just the right amount of a spicy kick. Get a big piece of warmed baguette and dip your way to the bottom of the bowl.
8. Truffle Fries from The Crest
The Crest is really good at a lot of things, but their truffle fries definitely have people coming back for seconds. They are soft, yet firm, and have the perfect level of truffle fragrance. Get these on their own or as a side - you won't be disappointed.
