While many people who live in the Cincinnati area live within the city limits, there are plenty who call the Queen City home and live on the outskirts. Since just about everyone travels around the Tristate for different attractions, restaurants, and other destinations, we love to feature remote places that are worth the drive.
In a recent feature on a pizza joint in the middle of nowhere (you can read all about it here), many readers recommended we look into Boar's Head Bait & Carryout in Batavia. This is, indeed, another hidden gem that's out of the way, but this country store near Cincinnati has pizza, hoagies, and a welcoming atmosphere that all make it worth the drive.
Boar's Head Bait & Carryout is located on SR-32, east of Cincinnati in Batavia. It's just minutes from East Fork State Park and from the outside, appears to be a typical gas station and general store.
However, if you've ever pulled over and walked through the doors of Boar's Head, you know that it's not your typical gas station. For starters, it's owned and operated by a local family, who you'll likely meet when you visit. The store has everything you need for your trip to the park, including pizza and hoagies to satisfy any cravings.
Its location near East Fork Lake and the park is ideal, given the store carries all of the essentials for camping or a day on the water. Many say that the gas prices here are better than anywhere else nearby, and the small town, family feel of the shop makes it perfect for both locals and visitors.
The biggest surprise at Boar's Head is that it has a carryout menu, which is downright delicious. One favorite is the pizza, which is always hot, fresh, and comes with a variety of toppings.
This is not your average gas station pizza that you'd see at a stop along the highway. These pies are made to your liking with the toppings you choose, and it's incredibly tasty.
The hoagies and sandwiches are also a hit, and they offer a surprising variety. The Chicken Bacon Ranch sandwich is shown below, and they also offer a steak hoagie, grilled cheese, buffalo chicken, and more.
While most people stop in for more than just some pizza or a hoagie, it's the menu that sets Boar's Head apart. When you visit for the food, stock up on other drinks, snacks, camping and fishing supplies, and basically anything else you may need.
