North Dakota has a whole menu of regional foods that anyone who grew up here will know and love. There are the Germans-from-Russia or Scandinavian recipes passed down from generation to generation, and there are the local dishes we just happen to like. There's a bit of everything here, and all of it is delicious.

1. Hot Beef/Turkey Sandwich

Who could say no to that much gravy? This sandwich favorite in North Dakota has hot beef or turkey piled high on bread with a generous scoop of mashed potatoes in the middle. Smother it all in gravy and you'll make any North Dakotan happy.

2. Lefse

Lefse is a well-known Norwegian treat that is well appreciated in North Dakota. We even have entire events dedicated around it, like the Lobster and Lefse festival in Fargo.

3. Knoephla

Many North Dakotans know and love knoephla. The creamy goodness and delicious dumplings of this soup can warm anyone's day.

4. Tator-tot hot dish

If there is any sort of gathering in North Dakota, like a pot luck or event, you can bet someone is probably going to bring tator-tot hot dish. And no, it's not called a casserole!

5. Caramel rolls

Mmmmm, warm and gooey caramel rolls are the best way to start the day or end a meal. North Dakota's caramel rolls are the best of the best - and the biggest - and that's just how we like them.

6. Kuchen

Speaking of desserts, kuchen is another North Dakota favorite. This German cake comes in tons of different flavors that many North Dakotans absolutely love. It's the ultimate comfort food.

7. Cheese buttons

Cheese buttons, or kase knoephla, are pretty much exactly as they sound and they are simply scrumptious. This is one of those foods that you can never have just one of!
