In tiny Elizabethtown, New York, you'll find a restaurant that's worth going the extra mile to discover. The Deer's Head Inn is located in the heart of the Adirondacks and it's turning out some of the area's best food and cocktails in a beautiful historic setting. Here's what makes this little tavern so special.
The Deer's Head Inn has a very long and rich history. It was founded in 1808, when Thomas Jefferson was still president. It served as a hospital for troops injured in the War of 1812 and it was an illegal liquor cache during Prohibition.
And that's not all. John Brown’s widow Mary stayed at the Inn when her husband’s casket lay across the street at the County Courthouse, and its guest books feature entries by U.S. presidents Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland.
The restaurant has also been a longtime gathering spot for less famous locals, seasonal residents, and vacationers. When you taste the food, you'll know why the place is so popular.
The restaurant has a "high-low" philosophy. So what does that mean? You can order a $2 can of beer to chase a fine Hudson Valley bourbon.
There's a lot to love about the menu. The restaurant showcases a rotating selection of specials along with comfort food staples. It sources fresh local ingredients wherever possible.
Its menu includes some simple but incredible tavern dishes like single-skillet chorizo, seared halibut, and pastrami pork chops. Everything is made from scratch.
The restaurant prides itself on a complete lack of pretense. It declares that substitutions, gluten-phobia, high-carb, low-carb, Paleolithic, and kid-size portions are not only tolerated but welcomed!
While the awesome food and history may draw you to the Deer's Head for dinner, you may want to stay a little longer. The inn has four well-appointed guest rooms. They all are beautiful and have private baths. Enjoy a perfect night's sleep before your next meal downstairs!
