It's a new year, and you know what that means: it's time to create a new dining bucket list. Luckily, if you're feeling adventurous in the food department, there are plenty of New Jersey eateries just waiting to be explored.

New Jersey is best known for pizza, Italian cuisine, and all sorts of delicious fare. If you're not sure where to begin, we've compiled a list of 12 amazing restaurants in New Jersey, one for each month of the year. From hidden gems to popular destinations, this list is sure to keep you (and your appetite) satisfied all year long.

1. January: Rat's Restaurant - Hamilton Township

Rat's Restaurant in Hamilton Township is one of the most gorgeous restaurants in New Jersey, especially when it's snowy. The upscale eatery is located inside the unique art park called Grounds for Sculpture. After enjoying delicious French cuisine, admire this winter wonderland on a post-dinner stroll. Rat's is open daily at 11 a.m. for lunch, then opens up again at 5 p.m. for dinner service.

2. February: Barrio Costero - Asbury Park

Barrio Costero is a must-visit come February. The Asbury Park eatery has some of the best and most authentic Mexican food around, from the stuffed burritos and extensive taco options to the classics like sope and tamales. They even have gluten-free and vegan options! It's some of the best comfort food for a chilly winter day in Jersey. Hours are Tuesday and Thursday, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday until 10 p.m., and weekends starting at noon.

3. March: James on Main - Hackettstown

James on Main in Hackettstown offers plenty of creative takes on classic American dishes. Enjoy pan-roasted sea bass, apple cider barbecue smoked pork belly, roasted seasonal veggies, and a rotating menu of delectable gourmet desserts. It's fine dining in its purest form—and one of the best eateries in New Jersey. It's open Wednesday and Thursday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 9 p.m., and Sunday, 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

4. April: La Isla - Hoboken

La Isla in Hoboken is the spot to get a hot, delicious Cuban sandwich. This hidden gem serves up authentic Cuban food, from plantains and frijoles to entrees like Arroz Chino-Cubano and Bistek de Pollo. You can even stop by for breakfast and enjoy Omar's Stuffed French Toast, a crowd favorite. It's all sure to tantalize your taste buds. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday to Friday, Saturday until 10 p.m., and Sunday for brunch and dinner until 9 p.m.

5. May: MM by Morimoto - Montclair

If you're looking for fancy night dinner reservations to kick off summertime, look no further than MM by Morimoto—a gourmet Japanese restaurant—in Montclair. The sleek, minimalistic atmosphere is the perfect backdrop for the delicate sushi, crispy tempuras, craft cocktails, and decadent desserts on the menu. It's one of the fanciest date night spots in New Jersey. Hours are Sunday to Thursday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m.

6. June: Alice's - Hopatcong

Enjoy the beautiful summer weather at the outdoor deck at Alice's restaurant in Hopatcong. The atmosphere at Alice's, the colorful cocktails, delicious hot sandwiches, seafood, and comfort meals are the epitome of summertime. When you're done with your meal, take a load off on one of the deck chairs overlooking the lake. Alice's is open Wednesday to Saturday, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.

7. July: Battello - Jersey City

Battello is an Italian-based, seafood-influenced eatery in Jersey City with stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. The outdoor and indoor space at this restaurant is so charming and romantic—you'll fall in love with the market lights, brick exterior, and of course, the gourmet menu filled with pastas, oysters, and more. It's open daily for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then dinner starting at 5 p.m.

8. August: Hunan Taste - Denville

Hunan Taste in Denville is likely one of the most visually appealing spots on this list. The vibrant, ornate exterior truly elevates the dining experience. You can sit inside or outside and sip on sake or craft cocktails, savor flavorful appetizers like egg rolls and egg drop soup, and entrees like Grand Mariner Shrimp. Hunan Taste is open daily starting at noon and closes at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

9. September: The Barrow House - Clifton

As the evenings start to cool down, you'll want to cozy up to an old fashioned or glass of wine in a warm, inviting atmosphere. That's exactly what you'll find at The Barrow House, an American Farmhouse restaurant. Enjoy unique menu items like tempura squash rings, branzino with sage brown butter, or crispy Brussels sprouts. Or, come on the weekend for brunch! Hours are weekdays from noon to 10 p.m. or weekend brunch at 11 a.m.

10. October: Dominick's - Newton

New Jersey is known for its amazing pizza, and Dominick's is regarded as one of the best in the state. Whether you're looking for a classic cheese or a Palermo square pie filled with all sorts of meats and veggies, you'll find it all at this spot. Pick it up to go or bring the family to the small dining area. You won't be disappointed. Dominick's is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (open until 11 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday).

11. November: Saddle River Inn - Saddle River

An upscale French restaurant, Saddle River Inn, is the perfect place for a fancy November dinner with loved ones. The unassuming red exterior makes way for vaulted, wood-beam ceilings, fancy table settings, and a romantic lodge feel. Enjoy entrees like Long Island Duck, Wagyu beef, and an affogato for dessert. The Inn takes reservations Tuesday to Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

12. December: The Lobster House Restaurant - Cape May

This Cape May Harbor eatery is elegant and pretty, with excellent seafood. Each year for the holidays, staff deck out the cabin-style interior with wreaths, red bows, and all sorts of Christmas decor. It's a great place to gather with family and friends for a holiday meal—and split buttery, delicious lobster tails, crab cakes, and more. The Lobster House is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for lunch and 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. for dinner (and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday).
