A Newark Icon, This Old-School Deli Makes The Best Sandwiches In New Jersey

Hobby’s Delicatessen in Newark, New Jersey, has reopened with its iconic sandwiches and retro atmosphere after an extended closure.

When it comes to delis, New Jersey knows its stuff! Our old-school delis may not be as world-famous as New York's across the river, but they've stood the test of time. However, one of our most famous delis nearly didn't make it this far! Hobby's Delicatessen in Newark weathered an extended closure in 2020 and many feared its massive sandwiches and old-school vibe would be no more. But fear not - this iconic deli in New Jersey is back open and better than ever. I don't know what I love most about it - the carved smoked meats, the delicious freebies that kick off the meal, or the uniquely retro atmosphere that makes you feel like you've just come home. We think it just might serve the best sandwiches in New Jersey, but one way or another, Newark wouldn't be the same without Hobby's, and it's ready for you to join the many who love it!

Its old facade gives away that Hobby's is a retro kind of place, and it thankfully hasn't lost any of that charm after being closed for almost two years!

Upon stepping inside, it's easy to forget that it's 2023 outside. All the little details feel exactly as they should.

That includes one of the best indications that you're in a true old-school Jewish deli - free pickles! You'll find full-sour, half-sour, and even pickled tomatoes here.

Another great test - how's the matzo ball soup? This one is pretty close to the platonic ideal, with a huge matzo ball and loaded with chicken and veggies.

Then there are the sandwiches, and they're a mouthful! You'll find the classic corned beef and pastrami here, of course, and they live up to the hype.

The menu is huge and features many new-school options too, like this chicken-and-egg indulgence.

The sides don't often get too much attention at delis, but that's not the case here. The onion rings are Hobby's are among New Jersey's best.

The restaurant also does a brisk business in catering, so you might just want to bring Hobby's to your next event!
